Brazil´s most important trombone player, playing in hundreds of recordings (48 solo LPs) and in musical groups since the 30s, Raul de Barros passed away this month at the age of 93. He created a style he called hot-samba, withe he frantic ballroom sounds of the gafieiras, where people came to dance and musicians came to jam and improvise on solos. The first record here was by the important independent label Marcus Pereira, one of Brazil´s first alternative labels, whom in the 70s released several records with old masters and folklore from the country´s hinterlands. The first track is his signature riff, "Na Glória" (hence the title of this post, Gone to Glory). The second is a live album, with big band and crooner, showing the atmosphere of the gafieiras. As in a typical gafieira dance hall, the band alternates brazilian and american standards for the dancers to twirl and tryst.
